Heritage timeline

Older than every other inn in Mid Devon.

From a fifteenth-century courthouse and monks’ hostel through five centuries as a Devon coaching inn — the story almost ended in December 2008, before a sensitive rebuild brought The George back to Market Street.

  1. Milestone 1

    1450

    First established

Originally serving as a courthouse and a hostel for the monks of Tavistock Abbey — one of the oldest pubs in the county of Devon.

  2. Milestone 2

    1539

    Sold post-Reformation

Sold to the Arscott family for £14 1s 6d after Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries — the inn enters its long coaching-era life.

  3. Milestone 3

    2008

    Devastating fire

December 2008 — the original building tragically burnt down. The story of The George could have ended here.

  4. Milestone 4

    2010

    Sensitive rebuild

Rebuilt and reopened circa 2010, retaining the heritage features that make the inn one of Hatherleigh's defining buildings.
